RESPONSIBILITIES The Day 1 Specialist will attend the majority of sows farrowing(sows giving birth to their piglets). Work alternative schedules to accommodate the due dates of sows. In most cases, the schedule will be from Thursday through Sunday and could include 12 hour days. Schedules will vary from farm to farm. Starting rate for this position is $12/ hour Primary Responsibilities include: * Attend 90% of sows farrowed(sows giving birth). * Assist sows as needed to minimize still born piglets. * Drying piglets as they are born and ensuring they receive milk(colostrum) from the sow. * Managing piglet movements to ensure proper colostrum intake and to determine number of baby piglets to be nursed by sows according to their teat count. * Accurately record the farrowing event. * Euthanizing low viable piglets * Administer iron shots, dock tails and castrate males. * Feeding sows * Scraping crates for manure removal and removing afterbirth of sows who recently farrowed * Adjusting the height of heat lamps to ensure proper temperatures for piglets * Close communication with farrowing lead. * Saving piglets from sows lying down on them by listening and observing when in the room * Making rounds every 20 minutes to check on farrowing sows * Keeping a fast pace moving from stall to stall ensuring all activities are being performed. QUALIFICATIONS ENTRY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS: Must have good observation skills. Must be able to understand animal behaviors. Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, and make decisions. Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging, tattooing, and other procedures normal to animal husbandry.
